Painting the Cosmos
My purpose for this blog is to show how I work in order to help fellow struggling artists who might be suffering from the same problems. In turn, I’d welcome any constructive comments and suggestions to improve my own work.

I’ve always been fascinated by colours and shapes. That is partly why I’m passionate about abstract art. I don’t have to worry about exact colour matching and positions. My inspiration for this painting came from Kandinsky’s Several Circles. I only had a black and white copy which forced me to be creative. I began by tracing the outlines. No sooner had I picked up my brush with the first colour that flashed into my mind, then others followed like lightning. Working at a feverish pace, the shapes and colour made me think of space and the planets moving through it. I could almost feel the rush and speed of them as I swept my brush across the canvas to create an impression of the directions these planets might have been traveling. The thicker the paint became, I saw myself building texture and threw down my brush to grab the palette knife. Dragging that through the layers of paint created even more texture. The circles changed in size and position; there were more of them and I ended up with a picture that didn’t resemble the original that sparked my ideas. Even though I felt great disappointment that I couldn’t create a replica of Kandinsky’s painting, I was thrilled with the end results. Eventually this painting did sell.
In 2019, I discovered a painting on the internet using Bing, titled Agnieszka Brzezanska. Again, this was only in black and white, but it was similar to Kandinsky’s and reminded me of space and the revolving planets. I don’t know whether the name was the title of the picture or the artist who painted it. One planet was passing over another one and I thought of dark cloudy skies hiding the traveling planets. It reminded me of a curtain dropping down over the planets. The circular shapes formed an arc as they came down the canvas. This picture was the inspiration for my next cosmic painting.
I didn’t worry about the size of the circles, their exact positions or the number. I just painted, letting my imagination run wild with the colours and the stokes. As with the previous one, I used brushes and a palette knife, working in thick layers of paint to create texture, especially of movement.
